Traditional Wooden Boat Sailing 6/20/26

In this one-day introductory class, students will learn to sail the Charlie Merrill, a 17-foot traditional Swampscott Dory. The course covers the basics of small boat sailing, along with an introduction to tides and weather conditions on Richardson Bay. Students will also learn fundamental navigation skills, right-of-way rules, and general water safety practices .Additional topics include basic knot tying, traditional maritime terminology, and an introduction to seamanship on Richardson Bay. No prior sailing experience is required.

Note:

The Charlie Merrill is a narrow vessel, and boarding or disembarking requires a degree of balance and coordination. At times, participants may also need to move quickly from one side of the boat to the other.
If you have an injury or mobility limitations, this vessel may not be the best fit for instruction. However, we are happy to work with you to explore suitable alternatives. Please contact steve@cassgidley.org to discuss your needs, and we will do our best to help you get on the water.
